Why is SUV?

Kinja'd!!!

These two cars are the same deep down:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

While the BMW might be a bit more spacious... why make it larger? and taller? and heavier and less fuel efficient and slippery and environmentally damaging?

Deep down we know the answer: It’s money... BMW likes it a lot.

But I wonder why consumers fall for this trap...

There is your answer. Higher seating position, easier to see out over other cars.

Don’t call the X2 an SUV or a Crossover. It is ahem..a “Sports Activity Coupe”

Technically the X2 is the Mini Countryman, not the 5-door.

Okay, that is true, but consumers have survived for years without this issue, in times of enviromental concern how is it reasonable to be making cars like this?

Because size makes them feel like they are more, more protected, more important, often say high driving position so to be more aware of their surroundings, able to go more than a regular car off the asphalt (even if they have no idea how to operate it off road or even off the road, etc...

Car companies are always going to make cars that sell, sure they will make a few that go against the grain but that is in some effort to spark a new craze.

Cars like small hatchbacks in Europe, small saloons in Asia, massive pickups in America.

Sports utility vehicle - a crossover between a wagon and a utility vehicle used for sportsman activity (hunters, fishers, campers, etc).

Crossover utility vehicle - a crossover between an SUV and a passenger vehicle used primarily as a passenger vehicle with some all weather capability

Compact crossovers - slightly taller hatchbacks.

I’m going to tell you what I think for where I live. First, there is the rugged Texas mentality that a truck is what you want if you’re a real man. But, that’s not the big motivation for those that buy BMW SUVs. The reason for their popularity is that people think bigger and higher up is safer. Or at least it makes them feel safer. You can feel that viscerally if you pull up to an intersection, and you can’t see what’s coming because the huge Suburban or King Ranch F-150 is towering over you to your side, and these are ubiquitous because of aforementioned Texas mentality. Then, you drive down your city streets and see almost daily these spectacular crashes where someone’s entire front end is missing off their beater Kia Rio. It all percolates in the brain and spits out the conclusion that you need something big and tall to be safe toting your kids and doggo around Dallas.

There are big and little versions of the UKL platform . The Mini 3-door, 5-door and convertible are on the small version. The Clubman, Countryman, and fwd BMWs are on the big version.

I’m driving a 2012 Nissan Versa these days because someone gave one to me. All it needed was an engine, a transmission and a transmission. But with only 70k miles on the chassis, and the LKQ engine and trans had 30k — they claimed — and it’s really a comfortable, good-driving car that isn’t underpowered.

But it’s also not especially compact. Wide stance and doors that swing wide and except that it’s built like a high-concept beer can, and given that I only have $3500 in it and the low miles, it’s a practical car.

HAVING SAID THAT, if I were going to replace it with something new, I’d be looking at the Kia Soul. At least initially.

I see the PT Cruiser as having ushered in cars like the Versa and the Soul, though the PT had a low deck and a larger hatch. But the fact is, most of what anybody hauls around is bulky stuff like furniture or appliances that don’t have much mass.

Oh sit, link didn’t copy...

Trucks and SUV aren’t necessarily safer, and because small cars don’t stop existing new SUVs crash structures need to be lower and car’s need to be taller.

Also, a very tall car will be less stable than a low slung car, so low slung cars are better at avoiding accidents...

Jeep - a crossover between a utility vehicle and a drop top, used primarily to get from the house to the Mall parking lot. All while hunting deals, fishing for takeout and camping at the Apple store.

I love my Versa! I’ve got an 07 (bought it new back when). The only major thing that went south on it was a bent valve at 65k miles, so kind of a big deal there. Around 80k miles on it now. Hopefully no more engine work for another 5 years, at least, and maybe my son can use it to drive to school or whatever.

These visibility issues are real however. I have a 944 and can’t see past a new Civic. It’s like we’re in some sort of vehicular arms race to see who can be the biggest/tallest.

SUV: Off road capable vehicle built on a light truck chassis.

CUV: Unibody vehicle with slightly more ride height than a sedan/wagon. Mostly compromising in every aspect.

Compact CUV: See CUV, add more compromises.

Idk. And past any kind of warranty I had. My BIL is a mechanic. He rebuilt the engine in his spare time. It only cost me $300 in some parts thanks to him. Otherwise the work would have been almost the same as the blue book.

Still no clue as to what caused it.
